Dean is styling a ficus retusa at Shelmerdine Garden Centre's Annual Orchid and Bonsai Festival held in early February. Club members from Bonsai Winnipeg are on hand to answer questions shoppers may have about the bonsai trees on sale and to participate in one of several demonstrations at this event.

Here, Dean first defoliated the tree to better see its structure, and then made some pruning decisions to best show off the tree's formal front. He finished the design by wiring and setting the remaining branches.

This tree, a $300.00 value, was raffled off at a club meeting.

Welcome to the Bonsai Society of Winnipeg

The Bonsai Society of Winnipeg was organized in the early 1980s by a group of enthusiasts who wanted to get together to share their experiences, to learn from each other, to pool their resources, and to enjoy the companionship of others with a common interest. The club has grown over the years, has a more formal organization, and takes part in many official events in the city. However, the purpose and the approach to Bonsai continues to be the same ... we learn by sharing our experience, and pooling our resources.

Annual Cub Activities

The Bonsai Society of Winnipeg meets monthly, at 7:00 PM on the second Tuesday of each month, September to June at the Caboto Centre.

An Introductory Course on Bonsai is held each fall, usually over eight weekday evenings in September/October. Through lectures and hands-on workshops, the course covers the basics of how to create and care for a bonsai. A field-grown ficus tree is included for the final workshop which each participant styles from scratch. A one-year membership, a course manual and materials such as wire are included. This course is highly recommended for all new members.

In December we get together for a club dinner. Bonsai prizes are also on the menu!

In May just as the buds are opening, and in the fall, after the trees are dormant, we go to the country on a club-guided “dig” for native trees.

At the May/June backyard workshops we sell, swap, repot and prune, and enjoy good conversation at the homes and yards of four to six hosts.

Throughout the year, the Bonsai Winnipeg participates in horticultural, cultural or other events.

Hands on experience is emphasized by the club. Meetings feature workshops such as a mixing soil, making pots by hand, and pruning techniques. At other meetings, members demonstrate shaping, pruning, repotting, etc. Members share their experience and knowledge through moderated panel discussions which always include a question and answer period.

Periodically the club offers special workshops hosted by internationally known Bonsai artists. These are usually weekend-long events that include an exhibit of club trees, several workshops, a demonstration, lunch and dinners, and a raffle.

The highlight of the year is the club’s Bonsai Exhibit, usually offered in September. Our members exhibit over 100 trees and are on hand to answer questions from the public.
