BONSAI, A GROWING ART
IN MANITOBA

There are many excellent sources for learning about bonsai, but if you live on the Canadian prairies, this web site is designed to help you learn to deal with the local climate conditions, so you too can grow bonsai successfully.

Bonsai, a Japanese word pronounced bone-sigh, translates literally as bon (a tray or pot) and sai (a tree or planting). A tree in a pot! But not just any tree, and not just any pot! See bonsai basics.

Bonsai is the name of an art form. Design principles and sound horticultural practices are used to create small trees. These miniature trees, ranging in height from four inches to about four feet, are trained in shallow pots. The object is to create the appearance, expression and even the feeling of a tree in a natural environment, true to scale with a tree in nature.

Tropical Tree Order

Bonsai Winnipeg assembles group orders for tropical Bonsai trees several times a year. We order these trees from a trusted and reputable supplier, Miami Tropical Bonsai from Homestead, Florida.

Visit their web site at www.miamitropicalbonsai.com to familiarize yourself with what they have to offer.

As a group, we qualify for special pricing, which will be less than the advertised prices on their web site. However, there are addtional costs which include: packing and handling; phyto sanitary inspection by the US Department of Agriculture; and shipping costs.

Steps for ordering a tree(s)

When a tree order is offered, members will be notified by email with an approximate schedule and deadlines for placing your order.

1. View Miami Tropical Bonsai web site to select a species of tree. This grower specializes in many varieties of Figs, Buttonwood and Bald Cypress trees collected from local swamps and sea coasts, and many others, including flowering species such as Bougainvellia, Powder Puff, Surinam Cherry and more.

2. Choose a price range. Prices are based on the size of the pot or girth of the trunk. Typical sizes are 8-inch pots, 10-inch pots, 12-inch pots and 14-inch pots. Prices rage from $25 USD for starter trees to $50 USD for trees in 12-inch pots. Trees with thick trunks range from $68 to $150 USD.

3. If you have a particular style in mind, be sure to specify this. Popular styles are Informal Upright, Broom, Literati, Clumps and Art Style.

4. E-mail or phone your request to Joe at joeg@bonsaiwinnipeg.ca or 204-272-9551. You can also get additional information about the specific order and what types of trees are available at this time.

5. Your order will then be confirmed and you will be advised of the approximate cost.

6. The tree order is shipped and when it arrives, you will be notified so you can arrange to pick up your tree(s).

7. Once the costs are calculated, you will be billed for your order. You will be billed for your portion of the related cost which are calculated as a percentage of the total order. Example: If your tree order is equal to 20% of the total order, you will be charged 20% of the packing and handling, phyto sanitary inspection and shipping costs.

Important Notes:

Once you order a tree(s), you are resposible for it's cost and related expenses.
The grower cannot guarantee the tree once it leaves their premise. However, they do ensure that they ship live and healthy specimens.
