The meeting room is too small to accommodate sales tables and seating for the presentations, so please plan to conduct your buying and selling outside.

Now he wants to drag you along for the journey. Who knows? Maybe you will see something he completely missed. At least you will see what didn’t work and you can then build upon his failure.

Finding a Home for a Grapefruit Tree

Two grapefruit trees began their journey around 1994, when Daniel Mathes was a fourth-grade student fascinated by houseplants and gardening. He planted seeds from a grapefruit he had eaten, first sprouting them in a glass of water and then potting the seedlings together.

The trees have been with Daniel for more than 30 years. In 2021, after moving to a smaller home with less suitable winter light, Daniel decided that the trees deserved a new home where they could continue to thrive and be appreciated.

He generously donated both longtime companions to the Bonsai Society of Winnipeg, allowing their remarkable journey to continue.

One of the trees is now on exhibit at The Leaf. The other is well on its way to becoming a bonsai—and we’re looking for someone to give it a home.

There is a nominal charge for the pot, and you must have suitable conditions for overwintering this tropical tree. In return, you’ll have total creative control over its future development and styling.

We spend our bonsai lives studying trunks, branches, leaves and roots—but how much do we really understand about what is happening beneath the soil?

This fascinating and beautifully animated video from Kurzgesagt takes us into the hidden world of trees, exploring how roots grow, how they interact with soil and rock, and the astonishing underground networks of fungi that connect trees to the living world around them.

Some of the science may make you look at your bonsai—and especially its roots—in a completely different way. It’s entertaining, thought-provoking and packed with those wonderful “I never knew that!” moments.

Only about 12 minutes long, it’s well worth a look. You may never look at a tree quite the same way again!
