About The Bonsai Society of Winnipeg

 President's Welcome!

There are many excellent sources for learning about bonsai. Over the last decade many Westerners who served bonsai apprenticeship in Japan have returned to their home country where they have energized the practice of bonsai. They have done this by starting schools, creating videos for the YouTube platform and launching websites dedicated to teaching bonsai techniques. It's never been easier to learn about bonsai. However, there's a catch. Most of these bonsai teachers focus on traditional tree species that pose serious challenges in growing zones colder than zone 4. So, if you live on the Canadian prairies, our club can help you learn how to deal with our climate—classified as growing zone 3—so you too can grow bonsai successfully, indoors and out.

Our Members

Our members are the cornerstone of our club. They are from all walks of life and span all ages. Whether we maintain a bonsai collection of a handful of trees or in the hundreds, we are connected by art, horticulture, and a love of nature. We like learning, using specialized tools, and sharing what we know. Our members are generous with their advice, time, and skills.

Bonsai Knowledge

Bonsai knowledge is a moving target. Local bonsai pioneers passed on what they learned through trial and error and basic bonsai books. Now, experts conduct advanced research into bonsai techniques, horticulture, art, and design. Masters of related arts and crafts, such as ceramics and carpentry, provide much needed support to the bonsai community and our club.

Bonsai for Beginners

New to bonsai? We got you. Learn as you go by participating in club meetings, events and activities. Our goal is to provide educational content at every meeting. For those who want a fast track to practicing bonsai, enrol in our intensive Introduction to Growing Bonsai (ITGB). Through lectures, videos, and hands-on workshops, Bonsai Society of Winnipeg volunteer teachers cover the basics of how to create and care for Bonsai. A course manual, wire, membership and pre-bonsai trees are included. Course participants can also harvest additional trees native to Manitoba on guided field trips each spring and fall or purchase them from a local nursery.

Advanced Studies

Bonsai journeys have a beginning, but there is no end. We are constantly evolving, just like our trees. Bonsai Winnipeg caters to members who wish to keep advancing by offering the following: Workshops, study groups, sharing research on topics like fertilizers, beneficial fungi and bacteria, lighting for indoor bonsai, and techniques for overwintering tree species that require dormancy but not the harsh winter we experience in southern Manitoba.
