Care guide for Bonsai in Growing zone 3
Deadwood Management
Preparing a refined bonsai for exhibition or photography is a process of subtraction, timing, and restraint. At this stage, the tree is already complete in structure and design. The objective is not improvement through growth, but presentation through balance, ensuring the tree appears calm, mature, and untouched by recent human intervention.
Deadwood Management
Deadwood features support age and character and must be clean and intentional.
• Remove moss and algae to prevent moisture retention and loss of definition.
• Apply lime sulphur where appropriate to preserve deadwood and slow decay.
• Deadwood should appear weathered and natural, with no visible tool marks.
• Deadwood effects require time to lose the stark white colour of freshly applied lime sulphur.
In refined trees, deadwood complements the composition rather than dominating it.
The Goal: Invisible Effort
A well-prepared bonsai should show no trace of recent work:
• No fresh cuts
• No wire marks
• No tool scars on deadwood
• No disturbed soil surface
When done correctly, preparation disappears, and the tree presents itself as calm, natural, and complete—ready for exhibition or the camera without explanation.
