Care guide for Bonsai in Growing zone 3
June-August
Daily Tasks for Tree Health
• Placement: Site trees outdoors in full sun, partial shade, or full shade according to species and individual tree needs.
• Watering: Monitor foliage and soil drying rates; water as required.
• Pest & Disease Management: Apply preventative (prophylactic) treatments every two weeks or as needed.
• Fertilizing: Begin once spring growth has hardened (typically early June in Zone 3). Fertilize consistently through the growing season.
• Wire Maintenance: Check wired branches regularly and remove or adjust wire that is beginning to bite.
Care by Developmental Stage
Newly Dug Trees & Newly Potted Trees
Primary goal: Establish strong, healthy roots.
• Limit top work; allow the tree to recover.
• Fertilize lightly at first, then gradually increase.
• Use a nitrogen-rich fertilizer to support new foliage, which in turn fuels root development.
• Monitor water closely—avoid both drying out and waterlogging.
Trees in Nursery Containers
Trees in Development with Established Root Mass
Primary goal: Build structure and controlled vigor.
• Structural work: Perform major pruning and wiring.
• Wire early, before leaves obscure branch structure.
• Fertilizing: Fertilize to promote strong foliage growth.
• Foliage management:
Deciduous trees:
• Prune shoots with 8–10 pairs of leaves back to: 1 pair in the apical region, and 2 pairs on lower branches
Conifers with candles:
• Reduce candles by half in the apex and by one-quarter on lower branches.
Elongating species (juniper, larch, cedar, spruce):
• Prune extending tips, more aggressively in the apical region.
Trees with Established Structure Requiring Balanced Growth
Primary goal: Maintain form while encouraging refinement.
• Prune or extend branches to achieve the desired outline.
• Encourage even ramification and branch balance.
• Continue routine foliage maintenance.
• Fertilize for steady, balanced growth.
• Monitor wire closely and remove sections that are biting into branches.
Trees in Refinement
Primary goal: Maintain compact growth and fine detail.
• Fertilize lightly to control internode length and leaf size.
• Water carefully; avoid overwatering and overfertilizing, which can cause coarse growth.
• Focus on maintaining silhouette and fine ramification.
• Continue close wire monitoring and remove or adjust wire as needed.
• Prepare the tree for exhibit, and photography
• Avoid practices that encourage excessive late-season growth in Zone 3. For example, pruning late in September can trigger tender new shoots that may not harden off (develop a cuticle) before frosts, leaving them vulnerable to early cold and dieback.
