Potting Media
In Manitoba, bonsai soil mixes typically use pumice, zeolite, crushed quartzite (poultry grit), and Sea Soil™. Sea Soil™ is available from local garden centres. Good substitutes are organic compost, worm castings, and potting soil.
Soil blends vary by species: conifers may use mostly pumice, while deciduous trees often use equal parts pumice and zeolite, sometimes with quartzite and Sea Soil™. More organic mixes suit moisture-loving trees, with less frequent watering.
Dense garden soil should be avoided, as it compacts and limits oxygen. A porous mix ensures proper drainage, airflow, and supports frequent watering.
Before use, sift all components: remove particles under 2 mm, use 4–8 mm for potting, and reserve larger particles for drainage. Experienced growers adjust mixes and care based on life-style (how often they are able to water), species, climate, and local conditions.

Pumice
Pumice, a porous volcanic rock, helps distribute moisture evenly and absorbs nutrients for gradual release.
Zeolite
Zeolite, another porous mineral, also retains and releases water and nutrients, serving as a practical substitute for harder-to-source materials like akadama.
