Care guide for Bonsai in Growing zone 3

September-November

Daily / Routine Tasks for Tree Health

• Watering: Monitor foliage and soil drying rates; water as required as evapotranspiration slows.

• Pest & Disease Management: Apply preventative treatments every two weeks or as needed.

• Wire Maintenance: Inspect wired branches regularly and remove or adjust wire that is beginning to bite.

• Tropical Trees: Move tropical species indoors when nighttime temperatures approach 10 °C or colder.

• Prepare tree quarters for winter dormancy. Best locations are north-facing walls and fences protected from winter winds.

• Watch for end-of-season discounts at local garden centres for soil, pots, and supplies.

• Ensure you have photos and records for activities mentioned in the Year Round Work section.

Care by Developmental Stage

Newly Dug Trees from Fall Dig

Primary goal: Pot trees and prepare for dormancy.

• Focus on recovery; avoid unnecessary top work.

Newly Dug Trees & Newly Potted Trees from Spring

Trees in Nursery Containers

Trees with Established Structure Requiring Balanced Growth

Trees in Refinement

Primary goal: Maintain strength and protect structure going into winter.

• Fertilize to support root health.

• Monitor and maintain wire; remove any that is biting.

• Avoid practices that encourage excessive late-season growth in Zone 3. For example, pruning late in the growing season can trigger tender new shoots that may not harden off (develop a cuticle) before autumn, leaving them vulnerable to early cold and dieback.

• Protect top dressing with screens or burlap before winter dormancy
