Care guide for Bonsai in Growing zone 3

Monitor Tree Health

Monitor foliage and soil transpiration:

Observe leaf color, turgor, extension, and soil moisture. Adjust watering based on weather, species requirements, container size, and soil composition.

Assess light and exposure:

Confirm each tree is receiving appropriate sun, shade, and airflow for its species and stage of development, adjusting placement as seasonal conditions change.

Watch for early signs of stress, pests, or disease:

Look for reduced vigor, abnormal leaf drop, discoloration, spotting, dieback, or changes in bud development, and respond promptly.

Monitor root-zone health:

Be alert to poor drainage, persistent moisture, sour smells, or algae and moss buildup that may indicate root stress or declining soil condition.

Fertilize appropriately:

Apply fertilizer according to the season and the tree’s stage of development. Adjust strength and frequency based on observed growth response rather than a fixed schedule.

Apply preventative treatments:

Use prophylactic pest and disease treatments every two weeks or as conditions require, rotating products when appropriate to avoid resistance.

Inspect wire regularly:

Remove or adjust any wire that is beginning to bite into bark or restrict sap flow.

Evaluate overall vigour across the collection:

Compare growth rates, leaf size, and recovery after work to identify trees that may need adjusted care, reduced intervention, or additional protection.

Practice restraint:

When uncertainty exists, observe before acting. Many problems are worsened by overwatering, overfertilizing, or excessive manipulation.

Document progress:

Take notes and photographs to track seasonal changes, responses to work, and long-term development.
